FEATURED MUSICIAN

This Dashing Young man is Vincenzo Bellini born in Catania, a seaport village on the island of Sicily on the 3rd of November, 1801. He was a prominent composer of opera who was well respected by his peers. He came from a family of mediocre musicians, his father was an organist and his grandfather taught him composition. Vincenzo was the real talented one in his family. He wrote his first composition at the age of 6. He was educated by priests and the church had a strong influence on his early life.
When he was in his teens he discovered his passion for opera. Inspired by Giovanni Pacini, a successful opera composer who was also of Catania, he left the small Sicilian village to study at the Conservatoire in Naples. His education was financed by the city of Catania which was a worthy investment because Bellini wrote some fine material and was beloved in his day. Upon graduation from the Conservatoire he received an invitation to compose opera for the opera house of San Carlo. His opera Bianca e Gernando was a great success lauded by his colleagues. One such colleage Donizetti was particularly impressed.
Following this great success he was commissioned by an impressario Domenico Barbaja to compose for La Scala which was the creme de la creme of opera premieres. His opera Il Pirata was a smashing success in Milan causing his reputation to soar and giving him a place within Milan society. His creativity continued with the success of other opera works such as La Straniera, I Capuleti e I Montecchi, and La Sonnambula.
Following this successful period he was contracted to travel to London. His operas were met with great success and in England he triumphed. From London he went on to Paris where once again he was victorious in his operatic accomplishments. In Paris he has two successful premiere of his operas La Juive and I Puritani. This great composer was another of a handful of musicians who met an untimely death he fell ill in the summer of 1835 and died in the early fall of the same year. His death has remained a mystery, some suspected foul play, but it is likely he died of cholera which was an epidemic that was sweeping across Europe at the time.
